Twentieth century half-calf, tooled in gilt and blind, with contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces to spine. Lettering-pieces lightly rubbed. Armorial bookplates of Edward Tyson of Wood Hall, Cumbria to FEP of both Vols. Some light browning and spotting throughout, particularly to free endpapers.
A Regency edition of Defoe's classic castaway adventure tale, originally produced as the first instalment in Thomas Roscoe's (1791 –1871) Novelist's Library (published 1831-1833), which is speculated to be the collection of novels referred to by Dickens in Chapter 4 of David Copperfield: 'My father had left a small collection of books in a little room upstairs, to which I had access (for it adjoined my room) and which nobody in our house ever troubled. From that blessed little room, Roderick Random, Peregrine Pickle, Humphrey Clinker, Tom Jones, The Vicar of Wakefield, Don Quixote, Gil Blas and Robinson Crusoe came out, a glorious host, to keep me company.
