AND OTHER FAIRY STORIES
Magic chariot Joan and the Wind Spirit.
London.
Arthur H. Stockwell, [s.d., c, 1908]
8vo.
128pp. With photographic portrait frontispiece, and initial blank. Original publisher's elaborately gilt-tooled salmon-pink cloth. A trifle rubbed and bumped, lower board a little marked. Some spotting to frontispiece. Short tear to foot of title at imprint (without loss), marginal paper flaw to pp.59-60, else fine. Presentation copy, inscribed 'Mrs Walter Taylor from Teresa M. Hooley' in pencil to FFEP.
A presentation copy of an entirely unrecorded variant title of prolific female poet and writer Teresa Hooley's (1888-1973) collection of Fairy stories for children, otherwise entitled 'Joan and the Wind Spirit'.
Hooley worked predominantly from 1920 to the middle of the 20th century. Falling out of fashion in her later years, she is best remembered for her First World War Poem 'A War Film', which first appeared in Songs of All Seasons (London, 1927).
The title story, subtitled within the text 'Or How Benny went to Cloudland, and what happened to him there', is an imaginative and evocative account of trip to the Clouds by young Benny White. Given this is a presentation copy, one assumes the title was later changed to Joan and the Wind Spirit, the first of the 13 tales within the volume. We have been unable to trace any other copies with this title in the usual databases, worldwide.
