SIGNED WITH A GATE
In memoriam.
London.
Macmillan and Co., 1904.
8vo.
[4], 214pp. With a half-title. Contemporary richly gilt- tooled navy morocco, A.E.G., signed in gilt on the rear lower turn-in with what appears to be a gate; perhaps indicating that the binder's name was 'Gate' or 'Gates'.
Tennyson's 'In Memoriam', is an elegy for his friend Arthur Henry Hallam, and reflects both on his personal experience of grief as well as the natural processes of life and the questions of materialism.
The binding, though attractive and rather competent, is not particularly well finished - the lettering in particular - suggesting that the unidentified binder was an amateur.
