MORTON, Thomas. Speed the plough: a comedy, in five acts...

London. Printed by A. Strahan...for T. N. Longman and O. Rees, 1800. Fifth edition.
8vo. 94pp, [2]. A reissue of the first edition with the title page partially reset. With a final leaf of publisher's advertisements. Recent burgundy cloth, lettered in gilt. Lightly dust-soiled and browned internally.
An early edition, printed in the same year as the first, of playwright Thomas Morton's (bap. 1764, d. 1838) remarkably popular comedy, first performed in 1798 at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. A brief, early reference is made in the play to Cricket (Handy, jun.: 'Play at Cricket don't you?', Act I, Scene II); significantly the author was a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club - an institution which was then succeeding Hambledon as the pre-eminent organisational force for the nascent sport.
